Hitting Metrics:
BA - Batting Average - One of the oldest and most basic statistics in baseball. It measures how often a player gets a hit when they come to the plate.
xBA - Expected Batting Average - A metric that estimates the likelihood a batted ball becomes a hit— based on exit velocity, launch angle, and batted ball type, rather than the actual outcome.
BABIP - Batting Average on Balls in Play - Measures how often a ball put in to play lands for a hit.
BB% - Walk Percentage - The percentage of a batter’s plate appearances that end in walks (base on balls).
Chase Rate - also known as O-Swing%, is a statistic that measures how often a hitter swings at pitches outside the strike zone.
ISO - Isolated Power - A metric that measures a hitter’s raw power by showing how often they hit for extra bases.
K% - Strike Out Percentage - The rate at which a batter strikes out in relation to plate appearances.
OBP - On Base Percentage - The rate at which a batter reaches base.
OPS - On-Base Plus Slugging - The sum of a player’s on-base percentage and their slugging percentage.
OPS+ - On-Base Plus Slugging Plus - an adjusted version of OPS that puts a player’s offensive performance into context by factoring in external factors like park effects. It also normalizes the OPS statistic into an easy to understand scale. A 100 OPS+ is league average, and each point up or down is one percentage point above or below league average. For example an OPS+ of 90 means that their OPS was 10% below the league average. An OPS+ of 110 means their OPS was 10% above average.
SLG - Slugging Percentage - A stat that measures a hitter’s power output by accounting for how many bases they earn per at-bat. Unlike batting average, which treats all hits equally, SLG gives more weight to extra-base hits (doubles, triples, home runs).
xSLG - Expected Slugging Percentage — A metric that estimates what a player's slugging percentage should be based on the quality of contact they make, not the actual outcomes.
wOBA – Weighted On-Base Average – A metric that measures a player’s overall offensive value per plate appearance, assigning proper weights to different outcomes (like singles, walks, home runs) based on how valuable they actually are in producing runs.
xwOBA – Expected Weighted On-Base Average – A metric that estimates a player's offensive performance based on the quality of their contact, regardless of actual outcomes. xwOBA uses inputs like exit velocity, launch angle, batted ball type, and strikeouts and walks to define offensive value.
WAR - Wins Above Replacement - Estimates how many wins a player is worth compared to a replacement level player - someone called up from Triple-A or found on waivers.
wRC - Weighted Runs Created - A metric that quantifies a hitter's total offensive value by estimating the number of runs a player contributes to their team. It is measured on a normalized scale with a wRC of 100 being the league average and each point up or down is one percentage point above or below league average.
wRC+ - Weighted Runs Created Plus -A metric that quantifies a hitter's total offensive value by estimating the number of runs a player contributes to their team with adjustments for ballpark and era.
